People in eight towns near Rome were told by Lazio Governor Francesco Rocca on Wednesday to keep their windows closed after a fire at a waste disposal facility in Ciampino on Saturday.

Besides the city of Ciampino, the other cities are Marino, Albano, Grottaferrata, Castel Gandolfo, Ariccia, Lanuvio and Frascati, reports ANSA.

People have also been told to limit their movements and use of air conditioning, as well as wash fruit and vegetables.

The measures have nothing to do with Rome.

Ciampino is home to Rome's second airport, but the fire did not affect its services.

Dioxin levels in the air rose above the legal limit after the fire, according to monitoring by the region's environmental agency, Arpa Lazio.
