Since 21, March 1999 has been declared by UNESCO as World Poetry Day. The decision taken at the 30th congress of this agency has as its main objective the support of linguistic diversity through poetic expression.
At the same time, the appointment of an international day for poetry was also made with the aim of returning to this genre of literature its first function, the oral tradition.World Poetry Day is conceived as an invitation to reflect on the power of language and the full development of the creative capacities of each of us. For this reason, UNESCO calls for the development of cultural activities at the local and international level in public and private institutions, including schools, municipalities, museums, cultural associations, publishing houses, etc. Before March 21 was designated as World Poetry Day, it was October 15 that was celebrated all over the world with diverse literary activities, as it coincided with the birthday of the Roman epic poet, Virgil. In some countries, this tradition of celebrating in the month of October is still preserved.
Although many of us like poetry, or rather prefer to use it especially in communication with the person of the heart, poetry nowadays is not read as much as it was years ago.
