The People's Advocate Institution is holding a discussion table on the occasion of the National Day of Missing Persons.

The legal advisor in this institution, Labinot Sheremeti, said that the Ombudsman in 2023 published the report on transitional justice and the implementation of its mechanisms, where its purpose was to document the crimes committed during the war and ensure justice for the victims. of these crimes.

Speaking about the number of victims during the last war in Kosovo, Sheremeti said that although they do not have official data, according to local and international organizations, it appears that over 13.500 people were killed or disappeared during the years 1998-2000.

He said that 10 of them are civilians, and 1133 of them are children killed or missing, while the fate of nearly 1600 people continues to remain undiscovered.

Meanwhile, speaking about the material damages of the war, Sheremti said that according to the calculations, the damages were estimated at around 22 billion euros, including 120 destroyed houses.

He also mentioned the amendment of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which enabled the trial in absentia for the suspects who committed war crimes and that the first indictments have already been filed.
