The death toll in Kenya from heavy rain floods has risen to 76, the country's government spokesman said. "Since the onset of these rains, starting March 1, 2024, it is with deep regret that we announce the tragic loss of 6 more lives in the last 12 hours, bringing the total to 76," Isaac Mwaura told a press conference. Mwaura added that 29 Kenyans were injured and 19 people were reported missing. He said the police and army have been deployed to provide aid and support to the affected areas.
Kenya has experienced relentless rainfall accompanied by heavy storms and above average rainfall during the ongoing March-April-May (MAM) long rainy season. Kenya's Meteorological Department issued warnings on Saturday, urging the public to brace for heavier rainfall in several regions, particularly the Rift Valley, the Western and Eastern Rift Valley Highlands, including Nairobi, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Lake Victoria Basin and coastal region. The ongoing floods have caused damage in 47 counties, leading to widespread displacement, destruction of property and infrastructure and tragic loss of life. /AA
