There will be 700 German and Austrian military unit forces that from the early October will replace an Italian peacekeeping force.
This is the third time within this year that German soldiers of the so-called Operation Reserve Battalion (ORF) will have to move out towards Kosovo. Nevertheless, Berlin agreed to NATO's request, writes Spiegel, in order to continue the successful operations, further stabilization and improvement of the safety situation in the north of Kosovo.
German newspaper Spiegel writes that despite the presence of about 5 800 international soldiers and an Italian force with 700 soldiers, the situation in Kosovo is alarming.
After the elections in Serbia in early summer, in which nationalist forces seemed to be winners there, on the following months there is a significant potential for a deterioration of the situation, Spiegel quotes Gen. Rainer Glatz.
This task force (ORF) was created by NATO for dangerous situations and if regular forces could not control the situation. In the Balkans, this unit was used mainly in the border area to provide freedom of movement and safety.
